Why was Sooth created?

In today’s digital world, knowledge seekers have access to vast amounts of information online. But actually finding credible, actionable insights is becoming increasingly difficult because it’s so easy for anyone to create and share information online, particularly now with the advent of generative AI. Sooth addresses this growing problem by providing a curated search index focused exclusively on diverse, expert, original sources of news, research, data, insights, and perspectives. By isolating high-quality information without the noise, distractions, and dubious content of traditional search engines or AI tools, Sooth supercharges your knowledge discovery, helping you get authentically smarter, faster.

Who is Sooth for?

Sooth is designed for knowledge seekers, specifically:

K-12 Students: Typically, 5th grade and above, as they tend to conduct more in-depth online research. However, it can also be useful for younger students as they begin their introduction to information literacy and online knowledge discovery.

College Students: Whether it is looking for open-access research or additional insight and analysis on complex issues, Sooth is a uniquely powerful tool for undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines.

Educators and School Staff: Teachers, professors, and academic staff who require reliable sources for teaching and research.

Librarians: Both school and public librarians who assist patrons in finding trustworthy information.

Government Researchers: Professionals in government agencies who need accurate and timely data.

Please note that while all sources are vetted at the source level, we do not filter individual content for age appropriateness.

What is the difference between academic research databases and Sooth?

Databases are closed systems that incrementally add archived content of various provenance and vintage. Typically, the content is in PDF form and the search technology uses keyword search. While databases can be valuable archived resources, the diversity and scope of the content is usually strictly limited to digital copies of printed newspapers, journals, and periodicals.

Sooth, by contrast, is live web semantic search that encompasses tens of billions of pages of dynamic internet content that is near-instantly discoverable by our users once it has been published online by the originating source. Sooth has access to content that is orders of magnitude larger than what is typically available in databases. Recent open access initiatives within the academic and research communities are also pushing more accessible research content online today than what was available in the past. Content that was once the exclusive domain of research databases is now being made available online. Recently, the U.S. federal government mandated that all research funded by taxpayers must be publicly accessible, without an embargo period or cost.

Which search topics does Sooth excel at?

Sooth performs exceptionally well on topics such as:

  • Current Events and Trending Topics
  • Sustainability, Energy, and the Environment
  • National Security, and Defense
  • International Relations and Foreign Affairs
  • Government and Politics
  • Business, Trade, and Finance
  • Digital Disruption and Technology
  • Society and Communities
  • Science
  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Law

Our Academia & Scholarly Resources category includes direct access to over 100 million open-access research papers from repositories like Semantic Scholar, Arxiv, PLOS, Springer Nature, and CORE. This makes Sooth an invaluable resource for in-depth academic research.

Sooth vs. Generative AI Tools

How should schools and educators incorporate Sooth into their AI strategies?

Students need and deserve ready access to original, diverse, and high-quality sources of information so they can independently foster their intellects. In today’s rapidly evolving information ecosystem, there are fewer and fewer options available for this to happen. In fact, as an edtech solution, Sooth stands alone. For that reason, Sooth should be considered a unique and vital platform that complements any AI strategy.

We encourage you to test Sooth on any topic against any other search platform at your disposal (AI search, chatbot, internet search, database, etc.) We’re confident you’ll agree that Sooth’s comprehensive, high-quality search results, organized layout, transparency features, and other tools and features deliver an unparalleled knowledge discovery experience that supercharges critical thinking and information literacy.

How does Sooth compare to ChatGPT and other new Generative AI search tools?

There are several significant differences between Sooth and all the new generative AI search tools on the market (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini / Google AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, etc.).

The most obvious difference is that Sooth does not offer conversational interactions with its users. While a user’s search query on Sooth can be in the form of natural language (e.g. “Is nuclear energy safe?”), the response you always receive is a well-organized layout of search results from a wide variety of high-quality sources across the internet. There are no AI-generated answers or responses to user search queries.

There are two main reasons for this:

  1. Hallucinations: The underlying technology (large language models) that powers generative AI search tools and chatbots is probabilistic in nature, not deterministic (like your calculator.) This means that generative AI is occasionally prone to making egregious errors (referred to as “hallucinations”) that are not grounded in reality. While this feature can be useful for a number of use-cases (e.g. brainstorming ideas), it is not helpful for knowledge seekers who want to ground their understanding on facts, truth, accurate data, and expert insights.
  2. Cognitive offloading: Building a deep understanding of a topic can only be achieved through a discovery process across a wide range of facts and expert insights with detail and nuance. Learning and intellectual expansion requires friction; the type of friction that generative AI search tools and chatbots are designed to eliminate. While their concise summaries may appear convincing, there is rarely a topic where a simple summarized answer helps us develop our own, inimitable intelligence.

Does Sooth use any generative AI?

Sooth does not use any conversational AI chatbots. Generative AI technology has made remarkable advancements recently, but it is not yet reliable enough to enhance the knowledge discovery process for serious and authoritative research. Generative AI is prone to making errors and does not provide the depth of quality or insight required for informed learning that fosters the human intellect.

We do carefully employ generative AI for two very specific applications that we believe enhance user productivity without sacrificing cognitive engagement:

Article Summarizer: This tool generates bullet-formatted summaries of articles (reduced to ~25% of original article length) by first retrieving the full article text and then summarizing it using our in-house language model that is specifically designed for generating summaries. Sooth users must first open the original work before attempting to use the Article Summarizer tool. This ensures you’re familiar with the original content in case you want to edit the AI-generated text. It is also respectful to the human writers who worked hard to create thoughtful, credible content for you.

Article Leveling: This tool generates leveled text of content by first retrieving the full text and then rewriting it to the selected reading proficiency level using a specialized, third-party language model. We offer five different reading proficiency levels to choose from, each of which includes approximate grades and Lexile level ranges. Sooth users must first open the original work before attempting to use the Article Leveling tool. This ensures you’re familiar with the original content in case you want to edit the AI-generated text. It is also respectful to the human writers who worked hard to create thoughtful, credible content for you.

Our generative AI applications are accurate, efficient, and safe. We do not use or store any user data to train our models, and no personal data is ever shared with third parties.

Inside our app, beside each of these generative AI tools is a “Tool Tip” that provides transparency how we use this technology and how we safely and securely treat your data.

Generative AI is a powerful tool but it should not be used in a manner that replaces critical thinking or limits agency. As we continue to evaluate and explore additional applications of generative AI, we will always keep these concerns in mind.

What sources are included in the different categories?

Sooth organizes search results into seven source categories to accelerate your knowledge discovery:

  1. Global News: Major U.S. and international news outlets with original reporting. All sources have a NewsGuard Trust Score of 60 or above.
  2. Periodicals & Specialty News: Daily, weekly, and monthly publications covering broad and industry-specific news; also vetted with NewsGuard Trust Scores.
  3. Think Tanks: Leading U.S. and international think tanks providing policy-oriented research, as ranked by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania.
  4. Academia & Scholarly Resources: In addition to global universities and their affiliated research centers, Sooth leverages major online academic repositories like Semantic Scholar, ArXiv, PLOS, Springer Nature, and CORE.
  5. U.S. Government: Official U.S. federal and state government websites.
  6. Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs):Organizations or entities comprised of multiple national governments aimed at facilitating cooperation on common interests.
  7. Other Selected Sources: A wide variety of other credible sources that don’t quite fit into one of the other categories. These sources can include consulting firms, financial institutions, trade associations, non-governmental organizations, and non-profits.

Each category is carefully curated to ensure the inclusion of reliable, expert sources relevant to knowledge seekers.

How are the curated sources selected?

Our sources are chosen through a dynamic vetting process focusing on reliability, relevance, expertise, and transparency. Our selection framework includes:

  1. Comprehensive Analysis: Ongoing identification of high-quality, relevant sources across each source category.
  2. Primary Focus on Information: Inclusion of sources whose primary “product” is knowledge, data, news, research, or insights.
  3. Relevance: Emphasis on sources covering subjects that shape society.
  4. NewsGuard Trust Scores: Ensuring a minimum NewsGuard Trust Score of 60 (out of 100), if available (note: our Misinformation Toolkit includes sources whose NewsGuard Trust Scores are explicitly below 60.)
  5. Inclusive Categories: Automatically including all sources fitting certain categories (e.g., U.S. Government, IGOs).

We rely on data from NewsGuard and other reputable organizations to inform our selections. We also consider factors like subject matter expertise, ownership, transparency, and reputation.

AllSides Media Bias Ratings™ do not play any role in our curation process.

We welcome your feedback to improve our curated sources. If you believe we are missing high-quality sources or have included sub-standard sources, please let us know at contact@sooth.fyi.

What does “no commercial content” mean?

We focus on sources whose primary product is information — news, data, research, and insights — and exclude sources primarily focused on selling goods or services. This means:

No Ads or Sponsored Content: Sooth search results are free from advertisements and sponsored links.

No Commercial Incentives: Sooth’s curated search index largely excludes companies that sell products or services. This helps to ensure information is free from ulterior commercial motives. Sooth, however, does include trade associations within the Other Selected Sources category. Trade associations can display biased views that promote certain commercial interests, however, they are usually fact-based and represent expert perspectives that represent a broad coalition of aligned interests.

Enhanced Research Focus: Allows you to concentrate on high-quality, reliable information with minimal commercial distractions.

For example, searching for “clean energy” topics on Sooth yield results extremely rich in diverse, expert information, unlike search results on other platforms that are saturated with ads and commercial content from companies selling energy-related products.

Does Sooth vet all search results?

No. Sooth only vets sources at the domain level. Once a source is included in Sooth’s curated search index, most of that source’s content may appear in search results. Sooth does not vet individual pieces of content published by any sources.

Users should always:

Apply Their Own Judgment: Always critically evaluate the information you consume, leveraging best practices in information, media, and digital literacies.

Use Transparency Tools: Utilize features like NewsGuard Trust Scores and AllSides Media Bias Ratings™ for additional insight.

Report Issues: If you encounter sub-standard content, please inform us atcontact@sooth.fyi. Our goal is to provide a valuable level of focus and source vetting, not to replace your critical thinking skills.

Does Sooth include social media or user-generated content?

As of January 31, 2024, Sooth no longer includes user-generated content (UGC) in search results. This decision was made because UGC platforms lack rigorous vetting, which is inconsistent with Sooth’s commitment to reliable, expert sources. While UGC can sometimes offer intriguing insights and disseminate breaking news quickly, we prioritize maintaining the highest standards of reliability.

We are building administrative controls that will allow account admins to reactivate UGC search results for their respective accounts in the near future.

Is Sooth trying to promote a certain agenda or ideology?

No. Sooth aims to provide access to high-quality information from diverse contributors without promoting any specific agenda or ideology. Our approach is driven by the following commitments:

Society Benefits from Diversity: Exposure to all sides of a topic enriches understanding.

Neutral Platform: We do not take sides on any issues or ideologies.

Informed Decisions: Our platform helps you explore all perspectives to make well-informed decisions.

We strive to present information transparently, allowing you to form your own opinions based on reliable sources.

Is Sooth only focused on the United States?

No. Sooth includes a wide variety of international sources:

Global News: Approximately 50% of our Global News sources are non-U.S.

International Think Tanks and IGOs: Includes leading international organizations.

Government Sources: Currently indexing U.S. federal and state government websites, with plans to add non-U.S. government sources soon.

European Union Content: EU-related websites are included within the Intergovernmental Organizations category.

Our aim is to provide a global perspective, enhancing the diversity and richness of your research.

Doesn’t a smaller index mean fewer search results?

Not at all. Our curated index includes tens of billions of pages from thousands of reliable sources, covering a vast range of topics relevant to knowledge seekers. By focusing on high-quality sources, Sooth provides:

Rich, Comprehensive Search Results: Access to a vast amount of reliable information.
